Be The Example

As parents, we spend a lot of time teaching our children what to say and what to do. We remind them to use kind words, tell the truth, share with others, and respect people. Those lessons are important.

But there is something even more powerful than our words, it’s our example.

Our children are constantly watching us. They notice how we speak to our spouse, how we treat the cashier at the grocery store, how we react when someone cuts us off in traffic, and how we handle disappointment, stress, and conflict.

They are learning what patience looks like.
They are learning what forgiveness looks like.
They are learning what integrity looks like.
They are learning what love looks like.

Even when we think they aren't paying attention, they are absorbing the values we live out every day.

The good news is that your child doesn't need a perfect parent.

They need a parent who is willing to say, "I was wrong. Will you forgive me?" They need to see someone who keeps trying, keeps growing, and keeps trusting God through life's challenges.

Those moments teach humility, grace, and resilience far more effectively than any lecture ever could.

The small choices we make today become the foundation our children build their lives upon tomorrow.

A Few Practical Ways to Lead by Example:
• Let your child hear you apologize when you make a mistake.
• Speak respectfully about others, even when they aren't present.
• Show gratitude every day.
• Put your phone away during family conversations.
• Let your children see you read God's Word and pray.
• Serve someone together as a family.

What Does Research Say?

Developmental psychologist Albert Bandura's Social Learning Theory shows that children learn many behaviors by observing and imitating the people around them. Parents are often a child's first and most influential role models. Studies also consistently show that warm, responsive parenting and positive modeling contribute to stronger emotional regulation, empathy, and healthy social development.

God's Word Reminds Us:

"Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it."‍ ‍Proverbs 22:6

"Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ."1 Corinthians 11:1

"Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven."Matthew 5:16

Remember, your children won't remember every rule you made.

But they will remember how you loved.
How you forgave.
How you encouraged.
How you lived your faith.
